     1)  Election  of  JLGA  Youth  Officers  for  2011
     2)  Counting  Commercial  Doe  &  Market  Goat  Points  for  Youth  &  Adult  Breeders  of  the  year  award
     3)  Splitting  Pygmy  Goats  into  their  own  class

Board  Members  Present:  Jared  Ferguson  -  Brandy  Rachel  -  Lynn  LaCaze  -  Tina  Lyons  -  Karen  Konvicka  -  meeting  held  at  prior  to  JLGA  "End  of  Year"  banquet  so  also  in  attendance  were  the  majority  of  the  2010  qualifying  JLGA  Members  &  their  families.

1)  Election  of  JLGA  Youth  Officers  for  2011  A  few  nominations  had  been  received  via  email  &  phone  request,  however  there  were  still  offices  that  had  no  nominations,  thus  the  floor  was  opened  to  take  nominations  for  all  offices.  Nominations  as  follows:
President:  Haley  LaCaze  &  Coy  Bailey
     Vice-President:  Madison  Thompson
     Secretary  -  Sarah  Lyons
     Treasurer  -  Leah  Dupuy
     Reporter  -  Roxanne  Paul
     Parliamentarian  -  Cash  Bailey

Vice-President,  Secretary,  Treasurer,  Reporter,  &  Parliamentarian  Officers  as  listed  above  due  to  only  one  nomination  per  office,  no  run  off  needed.  Run  off  held  between  Haley  LaCaze  &  Coy  Bailey  for  President.  Coy  Bailey  to  be  president  by  majority  vote.

2)  Counting  Commercial  Doe  &  Market  Goat  Points  for  Youth  &  Adult  Breeders  of  the  year  award  There  has  been  a  request  to  count  com  doe  &  market  goat  points  on  breeder  awards.  In  the  past  these  points  have  not  been  counted  due  to  the  fact  that  there  are  not  papers  to  trace  breeders  back  to.  However  it  was  pointed  out  that  we  take  these  same  persons  words  that  these  goats  are  eligible  to  be  Bayou  Certified,  therefore  we  should  take  that  same  word  &  count  breeder  points.  For  2011  Commercial  Doe  &  Market  goat  points  will  be  counted  on  breeder  awards,  however  they  will  be  subject  to  the  same  rules  &  disciplinary  actions  as  Bayou  Certifying  regarding  false  representation.
Motion  to  accept  by  Paul  Landry  -  Second  by  Lynn  LaCaze  -  None  opposed  -  MOTION  PASSED

3)  Splitting  Pygmy  Goats  into  their  own  class  There  has  been  a  request  to  split  Pygmy  does  &  bucks  into  their  own  class.  This  will  add  another  set  of  awards  &  will  decrease  the  number  of  entries  in  the  AOB  Class.  A  short  discussion  was  held  on  this  subject,  several  members  made  it  known  that  their  youth  will  have  qualifying  AOB  Does  &  Bucks,  also  there  will  be  an  anonymous  donor  who  would  like  to  help  with  cost  of  this  class for  the  2011  show  season  in  order  to  help  the  AOB  Class  once  again  grow,  &  there  are  new  youth  members  who  have  inquired  about  showing  other  AOB  goats  such  as  Spanish,  Savannas,  &  Kinder  goats.  JLGA  Show  Secretary  Cynthia  Hailey  pointed  out  that  there  were  very  few  pygmy  goats  in  the  AOB  classes  while  it  was  both  AOB  &  Dairy  Goats.  The  pygmy  number  grew  &  continue  to  do  so  after  the  dairy  goats  were  separated  into  their  own  class  and  that  it  stands  to  reason  that  splitting  the  Pygmies  from  the  AOB  Class  will  give  the  AOB  Classes  a  chance  to  grow  again.  After  discussion  it  was  decided  that  on  a  trial  basis  for  2011  JLGA  show  season  that  the  Pygmy  Does  &  Bucks  have  their  own  class,  the  AOB  Does  &  Bucks  would  be  open  to  any  other  meat  breeds  than  boer  or  pygmy,  any  hair  breeds,  or  any  dual  purpose  goats  such  as  Kinder  Goats.  This  class  will  be  last  at  the  shows  in  order  not  to  delay  the  other  classes  &  if  at  the  end  of  the  year  the  AOB  class  is  not  growing,  then  the  Pygmy  Does  &  Bucks  will  be  placed  back  with  the  AOB  Does  &  Bucks.
Motion  to  accept  by  Tina  Lyons  -  Second  by  Brandy  Rachel  -  None  opposed  -  MOTION  PASSED

Motion  made  to  adjourn  at  6:25pm  by  Brandy  Rachel  -  seconded  by  Paul  Landry  -  none  opposed  -  Meeting  Adjourned.

REGARDING CHANGES TO SHOW RULES

            JLGA SHOW RULES - SECTION 2 - ENTRIES & REGISTRATION - RULE 2:
On ALL registered breeding goats, the original registration certificate MUST BE presented at time of check-in & be copied by the show secretary or show assistant. Suggested in red to be removed & replaced with the following: Due to causing delay in registration, the show secretary or person working at check-in will no longer copy registration papers. It now will be the responsibility of the exhibitor’s parents to bring a copy of their registration papers along with their original registration to present at time of check-in. If unable to copy papers ahead of time, there will be a copier on hand at each show for the purpose of coping registration papers prior to check-in. Registration papers only have to be copied once, unless the goat changes ownership within the same show season. These copies will be kept on file by the JLGA Show Secretary & kept on hand at each show. In the event the registration papers are pending or transfer is pending, the youth may show with those pending papers at that show. However, the youth has 60 (CHANGED FROM 30 to 60 days JUNE 2008) days from the date of that show in which they first presented pending papers to have the registration or transfer completed. In the event that it has been more than 60 days since the first show they presented the pending papers & they still have pending registration or trasfer papers, they WILL NOT be allowed to show that goat in any JLGA show until the registration or transfer is completed & they present the completed registration papers in their name to the show secretary. Suggested in red to be changed to read as follows: It is the responsibility of the exhibitor’s parents and/or legal guardian to make sure their pending paperwork is completed & listed in their name for ALL registered goats. All registered paperwork should be completed no later than 60 days after the first JLGA show the goat was shown in with pending papers. ALL REGISTERED GOATS SHOWN IN A JLGA SHOW SEASON MUST HAVE THEIR REGISTRATION COMPLETED & ONLY IN THE NAME OF THE YOUTH SHOWING THAT GOAT BEFORE THE START OF THE LAST SHOW OF THE SEASON. NO END OF YEAR AWARDS WILL BE AWARDED TO ANY REGISTERED GOATS WHO DOES NOT MEET THIS QUALIFICATION. Photocopied duplicates of the original registration certificate will be treated as pending papers. NO PHOTOCOPIED DUPLICATES OF THE ORIGINAL REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE WILL BE ACCEPTED AS PERMANENT PAPERS. 12/02/09 - CHANGED TO READ AS FOLLOWS: ALL registration papers must be in the name of the exhibitor ONLY. (Added 12/02/09) If an exhibitor has a goat with pending papers including but not limited to pending applications, registrations, or transfer, the exhibitor may shown this goat in the JLGA Open Shows, however the registration papers will be logged as pending in the first JLGA show (in a show season) that this goat is shown in with incomplete papers. The exhibitor must then get all the paperwork including but not limited to registration, change of owners, or pending application complete & in their name before this goat is shown in another JLGA show in that season. 2 copies are to be made by the JLGA Show Personnel & placed on file for the current show season. ALL registration papers are to be presented at time of check-in at each & every JLGA Open Youth Goat Show. ALL registration papers will be checked at every show against copies on hand.             JLGA SHOW RULES - SECTION 2 - RULE 3: - ALL goats MUST be in the (posession and) care of the exhibitor who is showing them. (REVISED March 2008) Due to the fact that goats are weaned anywhere from 3-5 months of age, Suggested in red to be changed to read as follows: The average weaning age of a goat is 3-4 months, a few breeders do choose to leave wean their goats at a later age, due to this reason, a youth may show a goat 0 to under 6 months (has been suggested that is be changed to 0 to under 4 months) of age at a JLGA show only if it is not in their possession as long as it is registered in their name. Goat 6 months (4 months) of age & over must be in the youth’s possession & under their care. ALL REGISTERED BREEDING (suggested this word to be removed) GOATS MUST BE IN THE NAME OF THE YOUTH WHO IS SHOWING THEM. Suggested to be added: At no time after 4 months of age, is a JLGA youth exhibitor’s goat to be in the possession of or under the care of any other person’s other than the exhibitor & their family, the only exception is during breeding due to the fact that some animals are transported to another farm or ranch to outcross breedings. Motion to accept by Jana Wilmore - Second by Paul Landry - None opposed - MOTION PASSED

JLGA SHOW RULES - SECTION 6 - SUGGESTED TO BE ADDED AS RULE 8: As stated above youth must show their own goats. The only exceptions are listed as follows:
A) When the exhibitor has more than one goat per class, they may ask a sibling or other youth to show their extra goats providing they are in that class at the same time showing their other goat.
B) Siblings may show siblings goats without the sibling being in the ring, however the papers will be treated as pending & the sibling who showed the goat on that day will receive the points.
Motion to accept A as stated above, and to strike B (in red) as stated above by Paul Landry - Second by Judy Latiolas - None opposed - MOTION PASSED

JLGA SHOW RULES - SECTION 6 - SUGGESTED TO BE ADDED AS RULE 9:

Motion to accept above with the addition of youth ages beginners & below & “special needs youth” by Paul Landry - Second by Tina Lyons - None opposed - MOTION PASSED

JLGA SHOW RULES - SECTION 9 - MARKET GOATS - Suggested to be added as a disclaimer at the top of this section - Wethers are to be shown at the discretion of the judge regarding bracing, driving, & whether or not the front feet can come of the ground. If the judge states before the start of the show that he doesn’t want the wethers front feet coming up off the ground & during the show he sees a wethers front feet leave the ground during driving or bracing, it is at his discretion as to how to handle the situation. Motion to accept by Paul Landry - Second by Judy Latiolas - None opposed - MOTION PASSED

Motion to accept by Paul Landry - Second by Jana Wilmore - None opposed - MOTION PASSED

JLGA SHOW RULES - SECTION 12 - DEFINITION OF BREEDING GOAT CLASSES - AOB DOES & BUCKS & DAIRY DOES & BUCKS Second paragraph under each section - **SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING AOB & DAIRY BREEDS** Each breed has their own set of breed standards & grooming & showing practices that are related to their specific breeds. Some of these breeds are required to be dehorned. However due to the fact that the AOB/Dairy Class split was new in 2008 & to give all youth an opportunity to show & learn, the JLGA will grandfather in all horned AOB & Dairy goats born prior to January 1, 2008 in which their specific breed registry & show rules requires them to be dehorned. However, ALL AOB & Dairy Goats born January 1, 2008 or after must conform to their specific breed & show standards & must be dehorned where called for or they will not be eligible to be shown in any JLGA show. Must be registered purebred status or above to be shown Suggested to be added here: in any JLGA Open Youth Goat Show & all breeds are to be groomed & shown according to their specific association rules & guidelines. All dairy goats with the exception of the goats in the 0 to under 3 months class, must be slick sheared from the hoofs up all over including the head by excluding tail - leave pom on end of tail & headpieces (where applicable) & beards on bucks. Suggested to be added - Hair is to be no longer than 1/4. (Also has been suggested that we extend the length from 1/4 to 1/2 or even up to 1” (no longer than 1 1/4") during cool or cold weather season so as to not over expose young dairy goats or bred does to unnecessary cold, most Sanctioned dairy shows end around mid October & don’t start up again till early March because of shaving in the cold weather. However, according to LSU rules dairy goats are required to be slick sheared for District & Spring Show.  Hair length is subject to be checked before start of all JLGA Dairy Classes.  Shows were the Cold Weather Rule applies to the dairy classes will be noted out by side that shows information on the upcoming events page and will be announce on the homes page before each show.  All dairy goats must be disbudded.** Suggested to be added - This applies to JLGA Open Youth Goat Shows only - it is the exhibitor’s & their parent’s responsibility to check rules regarding this issues with other association shows including State Fair of Louisiana and LSU State Shows.

These classes are for dairy breeds only as recognized by the American Dairy Goat Association. Must be registered purebred status or above to be shown & all breeds are to be groomed & shown according to their specific association rules & guidelines. All dairy goats with the exception of the goats in the 0 to under 3 months class, must be slick sheared from the hoofs up all over including the head but excluding tail - leave pom on end of tail & headpieces (where applicable) & beards on bucks.             #4 - ALL goats competing for Bayou Certified “End of Year” Awards are subject to verification to do done before next show if time permits.

We realize this is impossible to do on Wethers & Commercial Does, suggested to add here and the JLGA must rely on the information given by the person submitting the goat for Bayou Certification, however can easily be done on all registered goats. If after verification a goat is found not to be eligible for Bayou Certification, this matter will be brought before the JLGA Governing Body & a committee will be appointed to investigate the matter further on a case by case basis. If after the conclusion of the investigation into the matter this goat is found to be ineligible for Bayou Certification Status, then the person who registered the goat will be asked to pay for any Bayou Certified Awards and/or premiums that goat received. In red suggested to be removed & changed to read as follows - then person who registered goat will be notified of findings. Person found to have given inaccurate information regarding Bayou Certification eligibility may be subject to disciplinary actions. The goat in question will no longer be eligible to compete as Bayou Certified in any future JLGA shows suggested to be added for the life of the goat. The goat however may continue to compete for Overall placings & awards. All Bayou Certified points awarded to non-qualifying goats will be deleted.

Suggested to be added - It is the responsibility of any JLGA exhibitors parents to make sure the goats they are wishing to Bayou Certified meet ALL the requirements as listed under the Bayou Certified Rules. The following requirements must be met for all Bayou Certified goats:
        1. All Bayou Certified goats must have been conceived, born, weaned, & being raised in the state of Louisiana. Conception may have been natural or by AI or Flush means, however AI & Flush procedures must have been performed in the state of Louisiana including implantation of recipient does. Just as natural bred, or AI bred does, recipient does must reside, give birth in, & kids weaned & being raised in Louisiana.

When purchasing goats from Louisiana Breeders, if the goat is to be Bayou Certified, it is the Exhibitor’s Parent’s responsibility to ask the following questions:
        1. Was this goat’s dam bred naturally or by AI & kid in Louisiana?
        2. Was this goat a result of a flush? If so was the flush done & the goat born & raised to weaning age in Louisiana?

At time of certification, original registration paper or pending application papers listing breeders name (breeder is defined as the owner of the dam at time of conception) & location must be presented to JLGA Show Secretary. Secretary verifies Bayou Certified eligibility by looking at name & location of breeder first, then by looking at goat’s sire.

If more than one case arises from the same person submitting goats for Bayou Certification or more than one case from the same breeder, after the conclusion of all JLGA investigations into these matters have been concluded, person(s) may be subject to disciplinary actions including but not limited to monetary fines & suspension from the JLGA Bayou Certified Program.

REGARDING REGISTRATION, CHECK-IN, POSTING OF CLASSES, & SHOW ORDER

For the 2011 Show Season, please bring the original registration papers along with one copy to be presented to the JLGA Show Secretary at time of check-in. A copier will be provided for members to copy their papers at the show prior to check in. All registered goats being Bayou Certified must have their original papers along with 1 copy presented to the JLGA show secretary at time of being Bayou Certified. If original papers are not presented at time of Bayou Certification, then certification will not be given until original papers have been presented & a copy is on file with the JLGA Show Secretary.

For 2011 At each show a listing for registered goats regarding what ages are in which classes will be posted - After registration closes, ALL classes will be posted. Exhibitors will be given ample time to check postings for any mistakes regarding their goats, such as wrong class listings, or missing goats, etc. & to check with show secretary to make needed corrections. Corrections will be made on show secretary’s official book & only if time permits, will also be noted on the posted classes. Show notation cards will be available at each show on the registration desk for members to write down which classes their goats are in.

Suggested that the show order go back to old order of Showmanship, Market, Commercial Does, Percentage Does, Fullblood Does, Fullblood Bucks, AOB Does, AOB Bucks, Pygmy Wethers, Dairy Does, Dairy Bucks - with the exception during milking season if there are any dairy does registered for that days show in milk, then those classes will be moved to first on the show order that day. Motion to accept with the addition of rotating classes by Karen Konvicka - Second by Brandy Rachel - None opposed - MOTION PASSED

------------------------------------------------------

CHANGING DAIRY CLASSES BACK TO AOB

Dairy Classes have decreased, however we have talked to our judges & they don’t wish the dairy to go back in with the meat. As far as the AOB, this has been just a meat breed class this year & yes the Pygmies do have enough numbers to warrant their own classes, however they are competing well in the AOB classes & these meat breeds remaining together, will allow the dairy to continue to be judged just against other dairy breeds. Motion to keep classes as they are by Mrs. Cooper - Second by Mr. Dupuy - None opposed - MOTION PASSED

CHANGING BAYOU CERTIFIED

Not to allow Bayou Certified goats to show in the first show they are Bayou Certified in. NO MOTION MADE TO ACCEPT - FAILED

“End of Year” Awards

“End of Year” awards - do we want to stay with 5 placings in each category - if so we really need to work on our fund raisers

Sponsorships went really well - do we want to do just sponsorships & still the raffle & silent auctions at the shows & not do any separate raffles or fund raisers

Change to Commercial Doe Class

JLGA Parents voiced concern over a possible issue that will be proposed to the State Fair Board at their January meeting to do away with the Commercial Doeling Class - in turn that class will become a Market Class

JLGA Parents voiced concerns over this issue - don’t mind adding another class, however they DO NOT want to do away with any part of the Commercial Doe Class - concern is that adding this as another market class will take away money from the sales of market goats.

No  other  business  presented  for  discussion.  Motion  made  to  adjourn  by  Tina  Lyons  second  by  Karen  Konvicka  -  all  in  favor  -  none  opposed  -  Meeting  adjourned:  230  pm.

2011  JLGA  NEWSLETTER

Issue  #1  -  January  30th

GREETINGS Hope  this  email  finds  everyone,  2  &  4-legged  alike,  doing  well.  I  know  most  of  you  are  preparing  for  your  district  &  then  the  state  show.  Good  Luck  to  everyone.  Have  a  safe  trip  &  a  fun  time.

It  looks  like  it  is  finally  warming  up.  Hope  everyone  faired  the  cold  weather  well.  Some  really  great  cold  weather  suggestions  by  JLGA  Members  are  listed  below.
SUGGESTIONS
FROM  MEMBERS
FOR  COLD
WEATHER
PRECAUTIONS

           1.  If  you  are  having  to  transport  water  from  place  to  place  -  use  ice  chest  with  a  tight  secure  lid  -  the  water  in  the  ice  chest  freezes  much  more  slowly  (if  at  all)  &  therefore  that's  one  place  that  you  don't  have  to  break  the  ice  from  to  get   fresh  water  for  your  livestock  -  we  have  personally  tried  this  &  it  works  great,  just  need  more  ice  chest!!
          2.  To  help  the  animals  deal  with  the  cold  better,  if  you  are  fortunate  to  have  warm  water,  treat  your  goats  to  a  bucket  of  warm  water  with  an  electrolyte  solution  in  it  -  Put  it  out  in  small  amounts  -  just  enough  for  them  to  drink  at  one  time  so  it  will  be  all  gone  &  not  have  time  to  cool  off.

With  our  temperatures  staying  very  low  at  nights  we  all  need  to  take  extra  precautions  where  our  goats  are  concerned,  especially  if  you  are  kidding  right  now.  Some  more  of  these  suggestions  from  other  ranches  &  farms  are  listed  below.

          1.  If  you  have  access  to  pine  shavings,  make  a  nice  thick  bed  for  your  goats  to  sleep  on  -  the  shaving  provide  a  layer  of  warmth  against  the  cold  ground  &  also  help  to  absorb  wetness  -  if  shavings  are  not  available,  one  member  suggested  putting  down  hay  -  the  only  thing  with  this  is  to  make  sure  you  also  have  some  out  in  a  feeder  for  them  to  eat  or  they  will  eat  their  bedding  -  another  suggestion  was  gathering  pine  straw  and  lay  down  for  bedding  -  we  found  our  goats  like  to  eat  the  pine  straw  unless  we  have  hay  readily  available  for  them  to  choose  from.
          2.  For  baby  or  young  goats,  coats  are  a  great  ideal  -  one  youth  member  suggested  using  infant  &  toddler  size  sweat  shirts  -  if  you  get  them  long  enough  you  can  cut  two  holes  just  above  the  band  to  make  a  place  for  the  legs  to  go  -  make  sure  you  trim  the  sleeves  off  so  the  babies  won't  be  tripping  over  them  -  another  youth  member  suggest  using  doggy  sweaters  &  coats  -  Adult  size  sweatshirts  can  be  used  on  older  goats
          3.  Remember  to  use  extreme  caution  when  using  heat  lamps  -  they  are  great  if  you  have  new  babies  on  the  ground  especially  with  the  bitter  cold  we  are  having,  but  be  careful  -  always  make  sure  the  bulb  is  securely  in  place  &  not  loose  at  all  -  make  sure  that  the  electrical  cord  is  up  so  the  goats  won't  have  the  temptation  to  use  it  as  a  nighttime  snack  -  also  make  sure  the  light  is  secured  with  clamps  &  then  use  extra  d-ring  clips  or  other  means  as  a  back  up  incase  it  gets  knocked  or  bumped  -  some  members  have  recommended  the  heat  lamps  with  the  wire  basket  over  the  light  -  always  be  mindful  not  to  place  heat  lamp  near  hay  or  other  flammable  materials.

If  you  have  a  suggestion  on  goat  health  or  care  &  would  like  to  send  it  to  other,  please  send  it  to  me  using  this  email  addy  &  I  will  make  sure  it  goes  out  to  our  members.  www.boeredsillygoatranch@hotmail.com  Attention  Ms.  Cindy

How  do  I  take  care  of  my  goat?

MOST  IMPORTANT  THINGS  TO  REMEMBER:
     1.  Good  Shelter  -  have  a  place  that  is  warm  &  dry  in  the  winter  &  rainy  seasons  &  one  that  is  well  ventilated  in  the  summer.  Do  a  search  on  the  internet.  There  are  lots  of  goat  breeders  out  there  with  pictures  of  their  barns  on  their  websites.
     2.  Good  Nutrition  -  there  are  many  different  feeds  with  varying  nutritional  values  to  them.  Best  thing  is  to  talk  to  the  breeder  where  you  purchased  your  goats  &  ask  others  that  have  been  in  the  business  for  a  while  for  advise  on  feeds
     3.  Fresh  water  -  goats  needs  fresh  water  all  the  time.

There  is  lots  of  information  on  the  web  concerning  goat  health  &  care,  do  a  search.  Some  places  that  we  like  to  go  are  listed  below:

Members  Suggestions

COLD  WEATHER  TIPS:
     1.  Toddler  sweat  shirts  make  great  baby  goat  coats  -  use  larger  children  sizes  for  older  babies  &  even  for  wethers.
     2.  Dog  coats  are  also  good  to  use.
     3.  During  hard  freezes  when  you  might  loose  water,  store  water  in  ice  chest  with  secure  lids,  it  doesn't  freeze.
